Canadian Federation of University Women Victoria Scholarship and Bursary Society
The Club funds 22 scholarships and bursaries, disbursing $22,950 in 2008, to Greater Victoria or British Columbia female students at Camosun College, Royal Roads University, and the University of Victoria. Applications are made through the institutions. The recipients are selected by the awards committee of each institution on the recommendation of the appropriate faculty or department.
The Club won the 2007 Outstanding Philanthropic Service Club Award for its commitment of financial aid to deserving students in the community. It was the first group in British Columbia to recognize the obligation of the public to the planned university which later became UBC by providing a bursary of $50 in 1917. The Club has completed its 100th anniversary incentive to ensure that all awards at the institutions are permanent and self-sustaining.
As the number of awards grew, in 1977 the Canadian Federation of University Women Victoria Scholarship and Bursary Society was established to optimize the legacy to the community of access to education. The Society is funded through donations by members and friends, bequests, fundraising and an annual stipend from Club dues.
Awards are offered nationally and internationally by the Canadian Federation of University Women and the International Federation of University Women. View these awards on their websites.
