Following on the success of the "celebrating ourselves" tea in April 2009 we decided to provide an enjoyable opportunity to socialise and share news of club activities.  Refreshments will be available throughout the afternoon and at 2.30 pm there will be a short presentation on behalf of the Issues Group, on BC Aboriginal People with a focus on Education.  Other members or Interest Groups may like to present or display material at this tea.

Our speaker will be the new President of Camosun College, Kathryn Laurin, who assumed this role in September 2009 following  three  years as President and Vice Chancellor of Mount Saint Vincent University, Halifax.  Her topic is "The World of Post Secondary Education: Where is the Creativity and Innovation?” 

After  obtaining degrees in music and choral conducting from McGill and Indiana Universities, Kathryn has had a distinguished career as a professor, professional musician and an increasingly senior academic administrator at the University of Regina.  She has received awards in both the Arts and as a top CEO and is passionate about the art of effective leadership.  She will have much of interest to say to us. 

The menu will offer a choice of fish and chicken .  The sign up form can be found at the back of the April newsletter.  Tickets will cost $35.00.

Guests welcomed to see what we’re about!

 

 

Many were familiar with our September speaker, Jack Knox, who writes regular columns for the Times Colonist newspaper, covering a plethora of issues of interest to British Columbians. He spoke of “The Other Island.”

 

An ongoing series called the Other Island, in which Jack and photographer Debra Brash explore the far reaches of Vancouver Island, earned them a Jack Webster Award nomination.

 

Jack joined the Times Colonist in 1988, working as a copy editor, city editor, editorial writer and editorial page editor, before becoming a fulltime columnist in 2000. Prior to that he worked at the Campbell River Courier-Islander, Regina Leader-Post, Kamloops Daily News and Kamloops Sentinel.

The Climate Crisis – and the Birth of the Solar Age

Guy Dauncey is a speaker, author, and organizer who works to develop a positive vision of a sustainable future, and to translate that vision into action. He is President of the BC Sustainable Energy Association, and author of award-winning books:

Stormy Weather: 101 Solutions to Global Climate Change;

Cancer: 101 Solutions to a Preventable Epidemic, and other titles.

 

His new book, The Climate Challenge: 101 Solutions to Global Warming, was published in November 2009. He is also Publisher of EcoNews, a monthly newsletter that promotes the vision of a sustainable Vancouver Island. His home page is www.earthfuture.com

Following lunch, musical entertainment will be provided by Sharon and Harald Krebs who will give a recital in their popular theme-based “Lieder at Lunch” series. This event at Emily Carr House will celebrate Emily’s birthday, December 13. On display will be our gift for their archives of two signed letters from Emily Carr. As a thank you to the Club for this gift, a small donation to our Scholarship and Bursary Society will be requested. This event is open to our Club members and to the general public. Refreshments will be served.

The speaker will be Ann Saddlemeyer who will talk on “Writing a Woman’s Life”.  Ann Saddlemeyer is an authority on Irish literature and theatre with many publications on these and other topics.  A former Professor of English at the University of Victoria she moved to the University of Toronto in 1971 and in 1988 became the first woman to be appointed Master of Massey College.  She will be talking on the research involved in writing a biography – in this case that of Mrs. William Butler Yeats.

CFUW Victoria Annual Music Recital

Songs for Valentines

This year’s winner of the CFUW Judith Harreman Scholarship Award in Music, soprano Mary Jo Wood, accompanied by Yuki Tampo-Hinton, is organizing and presenting a delightful evening of musical reflections on love ... the joy of a full heart (Handel), the love of a true heart (Schumann), the romance of a sweet heart (Novello) and the fantasy of a restless heart (Bernstein and Handel). The recital will be followed by a reception in the Lounge across from the Hall.

 

This free recital is open to all so put the date on your calendar and plan to bring your family and friends.

 

Mary Jo says: “I was raised with a joy and love of music.  I have studied voice since the age of 12, with Constance Preston in Campbell River, at the Victoria Conservatory of Music summer school (to Grade 8 RCM with honours), and with Susan Young at University of Victoria.  I love to share with others my joy in music.”

 

Yuki, born in Victoria, has studied piano from the age of 2 and is currently working on her BA in piano performance at the University of Victoria.  She has traveled to Japan, Austria and New York on music scholarships and is performing Tschaikovsky’s Piano Concerto with the UVic orchestra on January 29th 2010.
