International Women’s Day Sunday 8 March 2009, 2:30 PM University of Victoria (sponsored) Farquhar Auditorium
More than 900 people joined in celebrating women, their work, their achievements and challenges of the past, present and future. Following a 100 year time line with power point projected pictures and stories, we focusing on the biographies of 23 key women, and commemorated the turning points in our journey together. Featured speaker, Margaret Visser, is well known for her books including, Much Depends on Dinner, The rituals of Dinner, The Gift of Thanks and her 2002 Massey Lecture, Beyond Fate. Invitations were sent to 90 local women’s organizations and several of them set up displays in the foyer. A door prize of framed art from her Emily Carr series, donated by CFUW Victoria member and artist Pat Martin-Bates, was won by a member of CFUW Richmond. The surprise of the day came when a member of the Zonta Club of Victoria stepped to the microphone and announced her club had decided that for this year Zonta’s yellow roses would go to CFUW Victoria for its goals of the pursuit of knowledge, the promotion of education and improvement in the status of women and human rights. Since 1999, Zonta International has commemorated ‘Rose Day’ to coincide with International Women’s Day, to celebrate the achievements of women globally. As host of this IWD event during the club’s centennial year, CFUW Victoria is proud to have been acknowledged as Victoria Zonta Women of the Year. For more see: www.zontavictoria.org
